manchester native alex coulton has nurtured a reputation for creating sub-heavy rollers thanks to 12”s for the likes of black acre, livity sound and bloc. with gamma ray burst, the next in his series of releases on london low-end specialists tempa, coulton consolidates his sound to deliver some of the most sparse, rhythmic work of his career. with the record’s title track, coulton weaves from hard-hitting kicks, through to dizzying tribal polyrhythms the whole time maintaining a minimal, space driven atmosphere that remains omnipresent throughout the track’s most intense moments. ‘ground zero’ revels in its spaciousness, allowing reverb to flood into the negative space between flashes of heavyweight techno percussion and saturated ripples of synth while the pulsating kicks that underpin ‘alpha decay’ are punctuated with bleak, discordant bells, rhythmic bass hits and hypnotic filtered percussion. showing his diverse abilities, ‘phase two’ is an exercise in measured restraint, as a cacophony of clicks and hisses come together to disorientate before forming a driving rhythm section before coulton maximises his expansive elements on the fog-tinged ‘ascent’. closing with the steady flowing, brighter-hued melodic work of ‘distant resonance’, alex coulton has created a masterful collection of experimental tech-focused electronica that bewilders, intrigues and will draw the listener in with each play.

after a string of releases in 2016, french journeyman and beat craftsman hugo lx returns on balance recordings with his first house long player. supposedly designed as a more traditional 3-tracks offering, the project progressively turned into a two parts album, reflecting on past, present and future events through organic electronic music, with the loss of a dear friend and men­tor as the turning point. instead of a contemplative tribute piece, this effort focuses on storytelling, narrating crucial life moments through various song and interlude formats, colours and musical styles, producing a vaporous yet funky, jazzy and hiphop infused house music, flirting with soulful atmospheres and ambiant elec­tronic textures.

“rainy days” is a subtle afterhours track, with an undulating groove and drums that feel like they ve been carved out of marblee. distant groans, hints of studio ambience and druggy, moaned half-words “edifeirwch” comes a long with the premise to sail off to vast open seas but also keeping you to the ground with it’s 4x4. fliping the side we have franco cinelli’s “rainy days” extended remix focusing on intrincated percutions wich making the groove give you this “forward and backwards” feeling.

it all began with a licensing inquiry for a sister funk cut which we wanted to include on our deep funk comp titled “feeling nice vol. 3”. after the deal was completed producer fred forsh mentioned that the backing band of nadine brown’s masterpiece “leave me alone” had released a 45 themselves under their name teakwood. after mr. forsh played us both sides we knew that this 45 would have to be re-issued. what was about to follow nobody of us ever expected. mr. forsh told us that teakwood recorded almost a dozen of songs which were supposed to be released on a full length album. for unspecified reasons the album was never released and it remained in the can for almost 40 years. finally, we are very proud to announce the release of teakwood’s debut album “a distant star” in early 2017. until then you have to be content with this 45 rpm single re-issue.

flames & figures is the second full-length album from the seshen, whose forward-thinking sound combines synthesizers, drum machines, live percussion and entrancing harmonies for an unmistakable fusion of r&b, synth-pop and electronic music. the long player sees the band on the cusp of a new era, two years in the making, the album marks an evolution in the seshen’s unique sound.

after a few digital releases, lunar convoy delivers a masterfully executed debut ep to inaugurate newcomer belgian imprint norite’s vinyl series. counting northern electronics, hypnus records, semantica and prologue among his main influences, lunar convoy’s first effort is utterly coherent while not failing to evoke a plurality of emotions. imbued with sacred atmospheres, infiltrated with mysticism, ritualistic melodies and aesthetically charged rhythms, outer rim territories is a testimony of his love for deeper realms. on the a side, seswenna’s trancey lead synth and pumping bass opens the ep with an excursion towards distant planets. ryloth ventures into darker fields, scattered with whirring and saturated analog complains and haunted by ancient voices. on the flip side, eriadu sets a more mystical pace with syncopated kicks and floating eerie pad, to embark on a parallel dimension. allen’s take on ryloth is symptomatic of the us-based producer, speeding things up and offering a stripped down version filled with devastating hi-hats and firing toms to end this solid 4-tracker with the hypnotic-yet-effective sound that got him signed on attic music, m_rec ltd, polegroup or more recently granulart recordings. with such a captivating release, lunar convoy has set a high bar for the upcoming releases and left us under his sway.

label owner, christian gerlach recruited the young and very talented alfredo mazzilli, which already showed his skills with his latest releases on edit select records or planet rhythm. in the ep, which is dedicated to the babylonian gods, alfredo takes us into worlds of sound that reminds us of a run through the jungle and arrivals at mighty temples. shamash opens the ep and prepares the mood for an ritual which is gonna to be celebrated. wrong assessment focuses the piece in its core, but in a deeper way and holds on to a heavy baseline. ishtar reminiscent of an ceremony and the ep reaches its climax which is also continued in the iori remix. the high­energy piece marduck could be considered as an joyfully extract from this distant world. with this packet lanthan audio combines the heavy architecture of old temples, but with an ease that welcomes the coming months with joyful anticipation.

tim green is back with another brace of high impact club tunes of the sort that have made him one of the most in demand producers of the day. whether serving up rolling techno treats for cocoon, essential mixes for the body language series on get physical or laying down compelling club sets in the dj booth, brit tim green is unstoppable right now. here he steps up to the get weird imprint with two more tantalising cuts that show just how broad and brilliant an artist he is. stirring opener ‘for a memory’ is eleven minutes of wordless and intoxicating female vocals, slick rubbery drums and plunging bass. the overall effect is hypnotic, rolling and perfectly groovy, and it will no doubt have whole dancefloors locked under its spell. some little melodic explosions, sweeping filters and luscious pads all help add a real air of grace to proceedings that mark it out as another classic from green. ‘for a distant memory’ is a subtle but noteworthy reworking of the same cut. in this one, the drums are less direct and more stripped back, there is a focus on the angelic, glowing pads and on spine tingling slices of synth that are reflective and emotive as they drop in and out. it is a perfectly trance inducing, heart warming cut that the likes of lee burridge at his all day i dream parties, or various djs playing on a sun kissed terrace around the globe, will all lap right up. these are two more essential tracks from the ever on point tim green.

better known as kemback, geoff wright is a bristol based producer, selector, composer, violinist, teacher, and waiter whose music is rooted in house and techno but often treads into the weird and wonderful worlds of jazz, soul, folk, and blues. while his gritty drums and shuffling grooves bear the hallmark of the city he now calls home, the melodic sensibility of his emotive strings and distant glimmering synths harks back to the tree-lined footpaths of the tiny scottish village from which he takes his name. his debut release in 2014, on bristol mainstay futureboogie, received widespread support from djs as diverse as skream, mosca, and nemone. more recently his effort as part of alfresco disco s acclaimed maximum joy series, titled awaken , has been likened to the music of artists including floating points and leon vynehall. good night & for you today, the two tracks on kemback s omena debut, showcase a high level of production skill. to complete the package the always excellent auntie flo (aka brian d souza) & omena label boss tooli take turns in remixing good night.

guitarist rolando bruno hails from buenos aires and got his start playing a raw brand of garage and punk with his band los peyotes. a few years back he took a step into the not-so-distant world of afro-peruvian psicodelico that s had a recent renaissance throughout south america. what made his early forays into a more tropical branch of fuzz so unique was his accompanying band-or lack thereof. armed with an electric guitar and self-produced and recorded backing tracks, rolando bruno and his orquesta midi jet-setted across europe and japan as a mad scientist one-man band, laying down a relentless style of chicha classica gone loopy that earned him several tours and a full-length album with the swiss imprint, voodoo rhythm. originally recorded in 2011 and now remastered and presented by names you can trust on vinyl for the first time, these two tracks are a glimpse into rolandos prolific electric madness and a lysergic-laced pointer towards things to come from the talented six-stringer.

floating astronomical objects and the void in between – jon hester enters the dystopian circle with four gravity manipulating techno tracks coming directly through the wormhole. jon hester got his start in the midwest us, living in chicago, minneapolis, and connecting with detroit. after years on the dance floor he took to the decks, going on to work in a record shop, host his own events, and hold residencies that developed his sound. music production and a move to berlin followed, but dancing and mixing are still the inspirations that drive him to create. his dj sets are built on physical rhythms and adventurous programming, effortlessly combining diverse varieties of techno and house. with an engaging presence and a knack for telling a story, he builds a unique connection with each audience, and works any room until it sweats.

ep number four of this series of eight remastered tracks with remix-tributes to the techno legend christian morgenstern is here, and kicks off with d_funcs remix of steigreider on side a. creating a warm grayscale atmosphere, the track is carried by a heavy sub kick groove thats saturated with the modern industrial energy that proves kowalski’s skills as a techno craftsman. as a contrast, jeroen searchs remix of aces high on b1 is a more minimal interpretation, carried by a slowly developing beat and playing skillfully with the most recognisable elements of the original. the final track, a remastered version of morgensterns lydia to the edge of panic is a timeless classic, painting a morgenstern-typical distant and dream like landscape and opening up into a widescreen chord progression, with an epic build up.

after a five year absence the illusive cottam label returns. since the original series paul has travelled the world djing, released on labels such as aus & versatile and started his own imprint ruff draft for his own original productions and tracks from other producers. currently taking a break from djing & concentrating on production it felt like the right time to reactivate the label that started it all with some new under-the-counter specials. first up we have ‘mixing tool’, a heavy beat and percussion setting the dark & foreboding tone, the unease increasing like something is creeping up behind you until the distant war cries reveal themselves - a deep track that is much more than the title suggests. next up, the long awaited vinyl release for the cottam re-wiring of a classic film title track, mixing the best elements of the originals synth score with a club ready beat and acid that adds to the original - this is one of the finest carpenter reworks you ll hear.

london based punk duo black volume are not easy to classify. their delirious industrial post punk sounds at times like proto house and at times becomes some sort of mutant electro. their b series sound is made of a conglomerate of filthy percussions, unexpected samples and something with the appearance of melody, with a weirdly addictive result. black rubber is james brown wearing black leather at 40ºc (in the shade) while suffering a mental breakdown. excentric melodies sliding down rhythmic dislexia. negative return blooms from an improvised beat with no traceable sequence, on top of which we find rubbery synth lines, creamy interferences and mysterious sampling, everything sounds like melting from old vhs footage with the future we enter a romantic dystopia. sensual and passionate but equally crunchy, it rises up through cheap calculator arpeggios, pitched vocals and obsessive bass lines. streetfight evoques a desolate landscape, devastated and radioactive. distant echoes from an extinguished human race that left behind only majestic rusty ruins.

new york coterie sheik ‘n’ beik line up the next 12” in a string of successful releases including legowelt & xosar under their now defunct xamiga guise, jeffrey scott and label owner rechulski. enlisted for their 7th record is the japan based mister saturday night and 1080p affiliate keita sano. with a strong affinity to analogue sound and old school audio processing, sano renders personal mind-maps in his work - eclectic and off-kilter productions shot-through with warmth and propelled by potent drums. his latest offering for sheik ‘n’ beik is one fans old and new will relish: a series of 4 warped excursions showcasing sano’s refined and idiosyncratic studio techniques. ‘bypass motion’ kicks things off with a fizzing 909 and a loose-limbed bass pattern set churning under brisk, steely atmospheres. dense in the low-end, ‘child’s play’ then follows up with a hard-nosed groove carried by horror-movie sweeps and distant computerised vocals.

the second tape on legowelt s nightwind records cassette series. through his remote viewing powers danny wolfers channeled the music of saab knutson of faroe islands circa 1993. 60 minutes of nordic ambient with a disturbing undertone of dark melancholia with vague notions of distant happiness. saab knutson is a man with many issues, but on the faroe islands there is no time for issues. to stay of sound mind, saab plays his synthesizers in the few spare hours he manages to find, unmistakenly influenced by faroe s spellbinding landscapes and grim climate. though danny has never been to the islands he has a definite puzzling calling to them, a luring force, so to speak. hopefully he will sell enough saab knutson albums so he can fund an expedition and find out more about this mysterious destiny... played on yamaha dx100, roland jx3p, alpha juno 2, emu 16 bit digital sampling keyboard. ruby metallic cassette tape in luxurious faux plastic case

the last sound carrier was based around the notion of intrepid intergalactic explorers trying to get to earth, this time we’re taken 10.000 leagues below the surface to trawl the deep sea. all the way down there, we experience increased pressure, sub-zero temperatures, darkness and previously undiscovered new worlds. up first we have ‘lactarius indigo mission’, which has a distinct urgency and ‘in-your-face’ bitch slap percussion. the bassline writhes under a variety of squelchy, bleepy effects, which add a layer of depth and the whole thing feels quite electro. after that *from the space to the sea* continues the electro vibes with more punchy beats, a rugged b-line and heavyweight kicks. carriers use of quirky details give this track a unique character and contagious energy.on the other side we are treated to another strange carrier creation, the laidback kepler 22b. named after the first known planet to orbit a sun within what’s known as a habitable zone, kepler 22b could well support life. the track is serene and full of optimism, a fitting soundtrack for a distant earth-like planet. minimal workout * diver level 1000* closes the ep with its unusual arrangement and simple yet deadly programming. another addition to the impressive sound carrier catalogue and perhaps its most leftfield so far

heard on “melancholia” are interpretations of honzo’s subconscious visions of life. the intense compositions are made up of drones, noises and distorted beats moving in and out of the frame. on opener “orientalism” said elements blend with hi-hat brushes, brassy synth pads, sci-fi noises and distant human voices evoking islam’s “adhan” (call to prayer). the theme contemplates over alienation caused by western accounts of “orientalism”, soaked in “hüzün” (the turkish term for melancholia). on a2 a rework of “moral masochism” is provided by the mysterious shadows outfit, starting with a distorted guitar over a slow and gritty rhythmic backbone which gradually turns into a chaotic high-intensity acid jam on the ep’s most dance floor suitable cut. on the flipside, “lovesickness” presents a broken kick rhythm periodically flipped by toms and accompanied by a disorienting hi-hat rhythm, ghostly strings and sporadic human moans – all resulting in a tribal mood, recalling a ceremony, perhaps a quest for a saviour from the blue temper? b2 presents the “moral masochism” original. again a distorted guitar plays over a slow rhythm, but compared to the remix, the original’s intensity is introverted, contemplating over melancholia’s effect of deriving gratification from self-inflicted moral humiliation. ambient closer “emptiness” explores a cold state with such an encapsulating airiness that it feels like a close account of another person’s mood down to the impression of their breath. arpeggiated synth noises appear from a distance representing increasing pressure from the outside world without ever suppressing the state of mind. as a result, “emptiness” sums up the state of melancholia experienced as a mood rather than the effect of a cause.

* -while exploring new production techniques using old and unlikely hardware, the results were so unusual that i really had the sense that these pieces of equipment didn t actually create these sounds, rather they were in fact some kind of elaborate reception device that allowed me to tune into transmissions from distant galaxies. the music i could hear was actually the received transmissions of pop hits from those distant galaxies that were being played on their radio stations. i quickly recorded all that i could before losing the transmission.
* i consulted with dr andrew read, the astrophysicist with whom i recorded guitar treatments in 1999. he has worked on the discovery of the most distant galaxies and astronomical objects in the universe. together we came up with a possible list of where these musical transmissions may have come from.

the evening wind carries the sound of distant music. raindrops running down the window like glistening pearls. those small moments, unimposing yet so intense and unforgettable. its this kind of moments that makes the sound of dolph stand out. the pounding heaviness of the kickdrum and the sharp smack of the clap might be omnipresent – but its not these rhythmic elements that make the magic happen. rather, its those small moments of understatement: dubby delays, whirling through the air like leaves. long filter modulations, morphing through the soundscape like wafts of fog. colourful harmonies, popping up like sudden flowers. a 10 inch vinyl comes with the mellow stimulation named free of thoughts as well as x, a collaboration by dolph and levolt.

finally a visitor from another meaning returns to earth, and vinyl. the viewlexx veteran is back on our world with lost encounters i, four cuts from the vaults. beamed in from a distant galaxy is the blazing brilliance of -dance of the happy shadows-. past film score greats immediately come to mind. vangelis. carpenter. moroder. -i rarely talk to strangers- pulses with crisp beats and rumbling arpeggios, cloudy skies ready to rain on a polluted l.a. in 2019. the blue dot is left behind for the elation of -j is for jupiter-. the stars are the place to be. -j is for jupiter ii- drifts from cosmic currents before illuminating the heavens for the lead out into end credits.

superb throwback electro sounds of the early noughties on offer here from swiss artist elektrobopacheck, debuting via his self affirming synthesizer music laboratory. this is quite reminiscent of stuff on vitalic s seminal citizen records imprint a while back. highlights being atlantic intertravel and kubusmann calculates which sound similar to the majestic modular tones of japanese telecom or the late night electro funk groove of ride on the waves. sure, he s not trying to re invent the wheel here, but it s all good!
